No, there wasn't any gold located here.  But, in BucksPort, Maine, Fort Knox served to protect the Penobscot River Valley from naval attacks in the mid 1800's.   More specific history and info about Fort Know can be found here.

The fort was built with many cannons mounts A view of the river One of the lone surviving cannons serves as a great photo-op for the kids This was an oven used to heat up the cannon balls before being shot.  That way, they could possibly produce fire damage to their targets.

Lot's of vacant cannon turrets line the fort Here's one of the inside cannons.  Good luck trying to move it! Another photo-op aboard a cannon Very nice views from the top of the fort

A very cool (and old) suspension bridge crosses the river The kids found the large brick ovens and thought it would be fun to crawl inside. Here, Brian & Ashley squeeze inside the oven Anyone care for some baked Samantha?
