Happy Hills Campground
Aug 24-20, 2001
Hancock, MD
Ah, the perfect campfire! This was the final trip of the 2001 summer season.
After this, the kids go back to school, and the preparations for fall and (ugh)
winter begin. Randy and Tammy joined us on this trip. It was fun to have them
along. We didn't do too much at the actual campground, but rather used it as a hub
for day trips. We arrived after dark having gotten a late start. However, we
were fortunate to run into Randy & Tammy on the highway, and were further fortunate to
have a pull through site. This made the setup much easier.
The following day, we packed up and headed to Romney, WV for a visit with Rick &
Terry. They have taken up Alpaca farming, so it was an opportunity to learn more
about this. The kids enjoyed seeing the animals (though they are not too terribly
playful). We also visited another nearby Alpaca farm. We brought all the
fixins for a fine Dutch Oven lasagna dinner, and boy did it turn out great!
The next day, we all went for an inner-tube float down the Shenandoah river. It was a 3-mile trip, but the slow currents and the leisurely pace we set, it took us some 4 hours to finish. It was a beautiful day. We pulled a cooler with lunch and drinks with us, and stopped on an island on the way for lunch. The kids enjoyed the water - both in and out of their tubes. We were all careful to put sun block all over us, but Tammy forgot to get her back. And, as you might have guessed, spent most of the trip down river lying on her stomach. So, she got a bad burn.
Randy and Tammy left that evening, and the kids and I had another day to camping. The next day, we enjoyed the campground pool, played some Bocci Ball, and just enjoyed ourselves. We finally had a nice campfire on our last night there. The next day, we pack up, and headed home.
I didn't take a lot of pictures during the trip. Most were taken at Rick & Terry's place. I didn't want to get the camera wet, so there were no pictures of the tube float. So, enjoy the pictures of the Alpaca's cause that's about all we've got from this trip.
